More parking could be provided at Uckfield Community Hospital if plans before Wealden District Council are approved.
The proposal is for 23 new spaces to be provided on a grass verge to the left of the hospital access road, starting opposite the entrance to the hospital and running towards the ambulance station.
The plans have been submitted to Wealden by Chris Macve on behalf of The League of Friends of Uckfield Community Hospital.
The new spaces would be used by staff, so releasing the existing 89 spaces for visitors to the hospital and GP surgery.
The number of disabled spaces, six, and doctors’ spaces, two, would be unchanged.
A statement submitted with the planning application says: “The variety and excellent quality of all the facilities provided within the hospital building means that it is extensively used by both the local population and patients from further afield after having been referred there by their GPS.
“This high standard of reputation has in turn caused difficulties with car parking which can cause blockages and restrict access with potential serious consequences.”
The statement goes on to say the objective of the application is to provide staff car parking in a designated area so releasing the existing car parking spaces for visitors to the hospital and GP surgery, thereby improving site safety and enabling the regulation and control of car parking within the hospital as a whole.
“This extra car parking space would not cause any additional traffic movements and the application is solely to control the existing vehicle movements within the site,” it says.
The statement also points out that 1,000 new homes at Ridgewood Farm could accommodate in excess of 4,000 people and future infrastructure facilities need to be considered to accommodate a greater number of local residents visiting the hospital.
Uckfield Community Hospital has departments which provide day surgery, physiotherapy, elderly care, minor injuries and many other associated care-based departments.
