A Wealden District Council planning officer is set to be based in the town for two days a week as part of a pilot scheme.
Uckfield Town Council has been asked to “host” the planner at its offices in the Civic Centre.
As well as carrying on with normal work, the Wealden officer will be able to help and advise town councillors and staff with planning applications and for half-a-day a week will hold a surgery for the public.
Town councillors have agreed to the idea in principle as long as there is some support for day-to-day running costs from Wealden.
Cllr Louise Eastwood told members of the town’s general purposes committee that Uckfield should grab the opportunity. It was a valuable project, she said, and it would be “very, very silly if we turned this down. Another town will have the benefit and we will lose out”.
The initiative is in response to the government’s Localism agenda.
Wealden is the overall planning authority for Uckfield with the town council able to offer comments and suggestions.
