Picture shows missing Bow Bells milestone and its Uckfield site

As the hunt continues for an historic ‘Bow Bells’ milestone missing from Ridgewood, Uckfield Preservation Society chairman Mick Harker says it was photographed in place as recently as June 2017.

He told Uckfield News a friend photographed it in Lewes Road on June 9 and he shares the picture above.

Mr Harker has also taken a picture showing the correct spot where the sign should be. You can recognise the site which shows the same white line on the road and fencing in the background as in the picture above.

The milestone is one of a series stretching along the A22 and the A26 giving the distance in miles to Bow Bells Church, in the City of London.

• Uckfield Town Council says there is another number 44 Bow Bells milestone in Eastbourne Road, Uckfield. That is still in place.
