New sports shop to open in Uckfield

Stephen, Wendy, and Finn Holliday who are preparing to open The Little Sports Shop in Uckfield High Street.

A new sports shop is due to open in Uckfield either on Saturday or early next week.

The Little Sports Shop, at 176 High Street, is a compact version of Final Score which closed last month after 24 years being run by the Holliday family.

The same family is opening the new shop but this time Wendy Holliday is taking the lead. Her husband Stephen and son Finn will still be helping but spending more time on squash coaching interests.

Traditional

Wendy said the emphasis will be on traditional service for the whole family, incorporating memories for Mums and Dads bringing in children to be kitted out for their chosen sports.

Old style lockers and equipment will be included along with the new in displays. “We hope parents will spot things they remember from their school days. We want to make coming here an experience,” said Wendy.

The aim is to stock essential sports equipment such as swimming goggles, running shoes, football and rugby boots, and hockey sticks. A tennis racket stringing service will be offered too.

Opening

The first opening day is dependent on the arrival of a credit card machine. If it is delivered in time then the big day will be Saturday.

The Little Sports Shop premises have been let by Oldfield Smith & Co chartered surveyors.

Director Richard Oldfield said it was good for the town to have a new sports shop and good for the landlord who secured the rent and length of lease hoped for.

Demand

Mr Oldfield said the demand for retail space in Uckfield, and the majority of Wealden towns, remained very good in contrast with the bigger towns, such as Tunbridge Wells.

He said the main difference was that smaller businesses were able to adapt quickly and move with the times while bigger organisations tended to get left behind.
