Wealden MP Nus Ghani has praised a ‘courageous’ Maresfield shopkeeper who resisted an attempted armed robbery.
Ms Ghani said she had been a regular at the Village Store for the past four years but made a special visit to thank Mrs Patel for her ‘brave actions’.
The attempted robbery took place at around 5pm on October 21. A man from Hailsham was arrested by Sussex Police and has appeared in court.
In a press release, the MP said: “During the attempted robbery, Mrs Patel confronted the suspect; however he managed to flee the premises.”
Members of the public detained a person nearby, who was handed to the police.
“Fortunately, thanks to the brave actions of Mrs Patel, no damage was done and no one was hurt.
“I was greatly saddened to hear that a proud local village shopkeeper had been targeted in an attempted robbery,” Ms Ghani said.
Mrs Patel acted courageously and had not been deterred from continuing to provide top service in the Village Store. People had rallied round and offered support to the shopkeeper showing, the MP said, the village’s community spirit.
“I am glad that the Sussex Police arrived at the scene promptly and that no one was hurt during the incident.”
