Moving Uckfield Farmers’ Market should be a ‘no brainer’, says Observer

Our independent columnist Observer again considers Uckfield Farmers’ Market and its future location.

I see Wealden District Council planners think it is a good idea to bring Uckfield Farmers’ Market into the heart of the town.

My word, they must all have degrees in rocket science down in Hailsham.

Well, I’ve got a PhD in I Told You So – and so have quite a few more people in this town.

The town council tried to get the market moved to the High Street; I used this column to trumpet the idea and plenty of others backed the notion.

Someone, somewhere up the tiers of government fell back on the old chestnut of ‘elf and safety and that was it.

‘Can do attitude needed’

More of a “can do” attitude is required. People putting roadblocks in the way of good schemes need to change their mindset.

“Bring me solutions, not problems,” my boss tends to cry. “We don’t have problems; just challenges. Now get on with it.”

What about Civic Approach?

Perhaps I should buy my managing director a rail ticket from Victoria to Lewes, so the message can resound around county hall.

I still think the High Street would be great place for the farmers’ market but if that is too much to chew, move into Civic Approach, as others have suggested, with the stalls spilling down to junction.
