Supermarket chain Morrisons seems set to open a branch in Uckfield.
It would be one of its M Local convenience stores – not a full-blown supermarket.
Applications for the post of manager closed yesterday, January 5. The company was seeking a person who had previously worked in retail management where “exceptional customer service is key”.
The job advert gave no indication as to where the store would be. The location is described as Uckfield.
A spokesman for Morrisons has this afternoon told UckfieldNews.com: “We are looking at a number of sites in the region where we can bring our Morrisons M local offer to new customers and are keen to identify local people to join our team.”
There are large empty premises at Bell Walk, formerly the Furniture Hut, facing the bus station, which itself is due to be revamped as part of this year’s town centre improvement plans. We understand the premises are in the hands of solicitors to transfer the lease. The sign (right) is in the window.
The large former Trading 4U premises are also vacant.
At least two larger shop premises are due to become vacant in the next few weeks. The town’s post office is due to move into W H Smith’s at the end of the month and shoe shop Stead and Simpson is also due to close this month.
The nearest Morrisons is at Crowborough with the nearest M Local at Haywards Heath.
Last summer, Morrisons announced a major expansion of its convenience store chain. See this report from Convenience Store (external link).
ALDI told UckfieldNews.com that it was not currently looking at Uckfield.
