More than 900 attend Uckfield fun and safety day

Uckfield Fire Station hosted its annual Wealden Fun and Safety day yesterday and saw 915 visitors counted through the door of the Bell Farm Road venue.

The event is organised by Wealden District Council Community and Regeneration and designed to promote healthy and safe lifestyles through active participation, demonstrations and information, writes fire station watch manager Ian Ritchie.

Visitors were treated to fresh fruit provided by Waitrose and healthy eating information from staff from Wealden and East Sussex councils.

Craft and play activities were available plus a sing-along with children’s entertainers. Stepping Stones Nursery ran a stall providing ‘healthy’ cakes and soft drinks. Community volunteers worked hard to support activities and produced hundreds of badges.

The ‘Firehouse’ saw the usual long queues as children used a fire hose to put out the flames and queues snaked around the station yard for the chance to sit in the Police van and fire engine.

A new attraction was Uckfield’s ‘Hook a cat’ tree (though chocolate Easter Bunnies were used) which raised over £100 for the Firefighters Charity.

Firefighters gave demonstrations of cutting somebody out of a crashed car and of rescuing a person from a fire. Personnel from Crowborough demonstrated their Large Animal Rescue Vehicle.

Sussex Police ‘locked up’ a large number of people, including the Town Mayor, in their van and provided advice on safety and security.

Sophie Hepworth from WDC Community & Regeneration (Public Health) said “Our thanks go to everyone who worked so hard to make the day a success – and the Safer Wealden Partnership who kindly provided the funding. It was a fantastic example of partnership working”.

This was another hugely successful event and Red Watch at Uckfield Fire Station wish to thank the public for attending and the organisations listed below who supported it.
