Matron Heather retires after 31 years at Uckfield hospital

Heather Green, matron of the surgical ward at Uckfield Community Hospital, has retired.

Family, friends, and colleagues gathered to wish her well at a party organised by staff and held at the hospital yesterday.

Heather has worked for the NHS for 41 years and 31 of those have been spent in Uckfield.

She came to the old hospital in London Road as a staff nurse and spent six years there before moving to the newly-built hospital at Bird in Eye where she has been for 25 years.

There have been massive changes in her time with the NHS. She says the biggest is how quickly patients are in and out of hospital … in the space of a day.

Fantastic people

And equipment has moved on dramatically, improving all the time.

Heather says she has loved working at the hospital, well supported by a “fantastic bunch of people, doctors, nurses, and everybody else”.

Now she is looking forward to slowing down, going on holiday, and doing all the things she has never had enough time for such as with the WI, and walking.
