June round-up of Uckfield business news

Relief about withdrawal of Tesco/Timpson planning application

Best news so far this month in the Uckfield business world?

Definitely withdrawal of a planning application to provide a shoe repair and dry cleaning kiosk on the Tesco site, writes Cathy Watson.

There was uproar in support of independent business owners who feared for their livelihoods if permission was given for the kiosk.

Uckfield Town Council opposed the plan at their meeting last week and Uckfield News reported on Tuesday that the plan had been withdrawn.

A Tesco spokesperson told Uckfield News yesterday: “After listening to local feedback on the planning application, we have decided not to continue with our plans.”

Glen Dixon owner of Bell Walk Dry Cleaners said on the Uckfield News Facebook page: “A very big thank you to everyone who has supported their local businesses.”

Other comments include: “Yippee. Best news I have heard for ages.” and “Brilliant news! Common sense has prevailed.”

But Cody Rabbett asked where people were when supermarkets started selling flowers, fruit and vegetables, and bread, and hit the businesses of independent florists, greengrocers and bakers.

Team4 Solutions event especially for business owners

Uckfield bookkeepers Team4 Solutions are organising an event which is open to any business owner who employs a team of staff.

The free payroll and HR event is called Keeping Payroll Painless and will be held on Tuesday, June 25, at Uckfield Civic Centre from 10am to 1pm. Lunch is included.

There will be a talk from David Wandless from Sage, about a new secure document storage portal where employees can log into their own individual account and access payslips, and other documents, securely 24/7.

And experienced HR consultant Tracy Humphrey will discuss common HR challenges for small businesses and tips for navigating them.

Fiona McNally and Sarah D’Alessio of the Team4 Payroll Bureau team say: “Your staff really are your most valuable asset no matter how big or small your business.

“Staff frustrations about access to payslips, or holiday information, can lead to multiplying admin which drains your time for sales and company growth. You need systems that are simple, secure and compliant, for you and your staff.”

Praise heaped on owners of Ridgewood Post Office

Comments on the Uckfield News Facebook page include:

Dawn Gregory: “I love this place. A true village shop with excellent service and post office. I have been coming in for 25 years. Good luck you deserve a lovely retirement.”

“Amazing work”

Sheree Wall: “Well done to them for their amazing work. I hope it stays similar, not another chain, Tesco Express, or something, please.”

Keith Balcombe: “A well-earned retirement for two of the nicest people I ever worked for, hope you both have a long and happy retirement.”

Sue and Jon say they will be around for a while yet because they still have to sell the business but they are grateful for the lovely comments.
