Town crier Ian Bedwell with town mayor, Cllr Louise Eastwood, and deputy mayor, Cllr Duncan Bennett

Ian Bedwell appointed town crier by Uckfield Town Council

Ian Bedwell was formally unveiled last night (April 9) as town crier.

The announcement was made by the mayor, Cllr Louise Eastwood, at the start of the full council meeting.

Later in the evening, councillors agreed to spend up to £1,000 on an appropriate uniform for Mr Bedwell, who comes from Ridgewood.

Tall man

At the meeting, Mr Bedwell told councillors he was aged 48 and works as a window cleaner.

He will certainly strike an impressive figure in his voluntary role – he stands 6ft 6ins tall.

He is involved with Ridgewood Village Hall.

To laughter, he said:  “Any excuse for a fancy dress costume, I am happy to oblige.

“I will be happy to carry out any duties you put my way and do them to the best of my ability.

“I will make as much noise as you wish me to make.”
