Howard Gilbert, a former history teacher at what is now Uckfield Community Technology College, has died.
Mr Gilbert, who returned to the school for a rededication ceremony in 2013, taught there from 1954 until moving to Watford in 1960. When in Uckfield he lived in Church Street.
He had already moved to work in Hertfordshire when his serial History of 19th Century Uckfield was published in 1962-3, according to Brian Phillips of the Uckfield Preservation Society. Mr Phillips posted about the death of Mr Gilbert on the Uckfield News Facebook page yesterday.
He said a death notice had appeared in The Guardian and the funeral of Mr Gilbert is due to take place at West Herts Crematorium, Garston, on Tuesday, April 28.

Mary Potter commented on the Uckfield News Facebook page: So sorry to learn of Mr Gilbert’s passing. He was a wonderful teacher and I have so many happy memories of him, including being my Form Teacher for a year. He fought so hard to save the old buildings and tunnels at the entrance to Church Street, but to no avail. The road widening programme went ahead, with destruction of lovely old buildings and the filling in of the tunnels in the area.
