The first trial pit to explore what’s beneath the pavements in Uckfield High Street is being dug.
An area just south of the former post office has been opened up by workmen.
It is part of the preparatory work for the second stage of a scheme to improve the town centre.
Excavating the pits will give evidence of underground conditions and identify locations for tree pits and parking spaces to be included in stage two of the scheme.
