Moves that will allow more land to be included as part of the Hempstead Meadows Local Nature Reserve are being made by Uckfield Town Council.
It will mean an area at the bottom of the Hempstead Road recreation ground and behind homes in Roman Way will be designated as part of the reserve.
It has long been an aim of the local nature reserve committee and the town council to extend the area.
It has become easier for the town council to designate the additional land as a nature reserve following an agreement struck with the county council.
East Sussex County Council had originally designated the land as a nature reserve. Now it is relinquishing its role and passing it formally on to the town council.
In effect, a co-ordinated move will see the county council de-designate the nature reserve – and the one at West Park – and the town council re-designate the reserves, to include the extra land for Hempstead Meadows.
