Healthcare trust denies Uckfield hospital’s surgical unit is under threat

Rumours are flying around that the surgical unit at Uckfield Community Hospital is under threat but East Sussex Healthcare Trust has denied it.

A number of people have contacted Uckfield News because they have heard the unit is due to close at the beginning of April.

And the hospital’s League of Friends vice-chairman Chris Macve says the organisation, which only recently donated a £20,000 piece of equipment to the unit, has made representations to East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust about its future.

He told Uckfield News league members have been made aware different options were being considered but haven’t seen them officially.

‘No proposals or decisions’

East Sussex Healthcare Trust says the unit isn’t closing at the end of March.

A spokesperson said: “No proposals or decisions have been made and wouldn’t be without commissioner and stakeholder engagement.”

Mr Macve said the League of Friends said: “We have made representations to Eastbourne and if they are looking at this it is certainly not something that we are happy with and we most definitely won’t support it.

“The League of Friends is extremely keen to support all of the facilities there currently are at Uckfield hospital and to develop them.”

He added the hospital was very much a town community hospital providing a fantastic range of facilities for the community and also for people from further afield.
