Energy Minister and Wealden MP Charles Hendry visited Harlands Primary School in Uckfield on Friday to learn how staff and pupils have significantly reduced their energy consumption.
The school has implemented cost effective energy saving initiatives while taking part in the Carbon Trust's collaborative Low Carbon Schools project.
Pupils told Mr Hendry about the low cost, good-housekeeping measures they have introduced and head teacher Mrs Louisa Michie said the whole school involvement in addressing energy consumption had resulted in financial, environmental and educational benefits.
The school has closely monitored data from automated meter readers to gain an improved understanding of energy use and made changes which have reduced electricity consumption by 16 per cent over a four month period.
Similar initiatives with gas controls are under way and have already made a notable impact.
Mr Hendry expressed a particular interest in the school's investigative use of meter data and urged staff to keep him informed about ongoing reductions and savings.
