A group has been set up to support Uckfield High Street business during roadworks which begin in January.
It has been set up by the Uckfield Town Centre Regeneration Joint Committee and includes a cross section of High Street businesses.
The core members are Louise Beard, owner of Josefina, who will represent smaller independent businesses; Mark Arno, of Carvills, representing Uckfield Chamber of Commerce, and Paul Cottingham of Waitrose, representing large High Street stores.
The three councils which make up the regeneration committee will also be represented. Cllr Donna French will be there for Uckfield Town Council, with East Sussex County Council represented by project manager Elaine Martin, and Wealden represented by Peter Griggs, programme support manager for the project.
The first meeting of the Uckfield Works Group agreed that its objective is to “minimise the perceived impact of the High Street improvements and to maximise the number of people coming into the town whilst the roadworks are in progress.”
Details of ideas and initiatives are being investigated and will be released once firmed up.
The roadworks due to begin in January are the second stage of the Uckfield Town Centre Highways Improvement Scheme and will affect the High Street between Bell Lane and Church Street.
They will include pavement widening, new street furniture, ‘smart’ traffic lights and improvements to drainage.
