It has been a month of success for Uckfield businesses.
Awards have been scooped and anniversaries celebrated as the business community shows itself to be in good health, writes Paul Watson.
Top prize goes to the local cinema which has been crowned European champion.
The Picture House
The Picture House is a destination for film fans from Uckfield and a much wider area but now it can claim to be Champion of Europe. Read more about the Best Independent Cinema in Europe.
The cinema also has a new look with a foyer that is making customers say “wow” as they walk in
And while we are talking awards, let’s say well done to Neva Consultants which was judged the Best Medium Business in the South Business Awards, covering all Sussex and Hampshire.
Here at UckfieldNews.com we love to share in the birthday celebrations of local businesses and last month it was the turn of the Highlands Inn which marked one one year since the Ridley family re-opened the hostely’s doors after refurbishment.
Claire Davies salon
In the town centre it was the Claire Davies salon marking 20 years as staff donned fancy dress for the celebrations. As a special treat for customers, prices went back to those in 1995 – just for the day.
Uckfield’s Chris Dowling is putting 35 years of hands-on business experience to good use by coaching and mentoring people who are starting or growing their own businesses.
Through his business Dowling Consultants, Chris offers coaching and mentoring on a freelance and independent basis.
Tressler Coachworks has been appointed by Vauxhall as a GM Approved Bodyshop for the local area and one of the first vehicles directed to the company’s Uckfield premises after the appointment was from the global brand Google
Sue Edwards Marketing
Sue Edwards of Sue Edwards Marketing has recently joined forces with Chris Dowling of Dowling Creative to add an enhanced search engine service to the website design and development part of the business.
She said: “Many small businesses, particularly when they first start trading, or within the early years, think that by creating a website enquiries and orders will naturally flow in to them - unfortunately it’s not that simple.
“Search engine optimisation (SEO) is an essential part of website development.”
The name says it all about this Uckfield business: Just MOTs. It was launched 20 years ago by Danny Pettitt and has since been franchised across Sussex and Kent. Read more about this family business based on the Bellbrook Business Park.
Fluffy Side Up
Sheep shall safely graze, as they say*, and a small flock are doing just that outside Fluffy Side Up’s flooring showroom on the Bellbrook Business Park. This innovative piece of marketing by business owner Sebastian Bishop led to an almost instant doubling of business.

Bluebell Vineyard Estates
Earlier in October we featured the grape harvest which was under way at Bluebell Vineyard Estates at Furners Green. There are more than 100,000 vines growing on land near to Sheffield Park and the Bluebell Railway.
