Footpath across Uckfield rail line cutting closed

Steps used by walkers to cross the railway line near Uckfield have been closed to “protect public safety”.

Hempstead Cutting second steps blocked off

People use the steps get to the bottom of the railway cutting and up the other side.

Closure notices suggest the route, known as Framfield 64, will be shut until mid July.

Hempstead Cutting second steps

The steps are one of pair which cross the railway line between Uckfield and Buxted, not far from the former Sussex Horse Rescue Trust fields.

One set of steps in the Hempstead Cutting, nearest Uckfield, fell into disrepair and were closed because there was an alternative route nearby.

That route, which goes on to join Etchingwood Lane is now temporarily closed. There is no alternative route now that the “second steps” are closed due to the condition of the staircase.
