Five flats plan for office space at Portland House

Ground floor office space at the new Portland House development in Framfield Road, Uckfield, could be converted to five flats.

A planning application has been submitted by Mid Sussex Homes, to Wealden Council, and documents accompanying it say there has been no interest at all in the three office suites.

They have been marketed, without success, since planning consent was given for the development in 2009, and the possibility of creating a retail outlet or mini supermarket in the space have also drawn a blank.

There are nine flats on the two floors above the offices and the design and access statement says the applicant has been left with little choice but to seek to find a “sustainable and viable alternative” for the empty ground floor space.

“The buildings are not suited to any form of light industrial or manufacturing/distribution use and this would severely conflict with the residential accommodation on the site, and have adverse impact upon adjoining properties.

“Therefore, a residential option appears to be the only workable solution and the accommodation can be set out in a form and layout very similar to the upper floors of the same building.”

Three of the flats would have two bedrooms and two would have three bedrooms.
