Uckfield Juniors played their first ever competitive squash match in the Sussex SRA Junior Leagues yesterday (Sunday, November 2) against Crawley Juniors 5.
The Crawley team consisted of a set of triplets, all of whom are nationally ranked within the top 40 boys under 11 so although young they are experienced and technically accomplished, writes Stephen Holliday.
First to play was Oliver Southall, who struggled initially to get into the match losing the first two games. However, showing great spirit, he rallied superbly to win the third game and got back into the match with some excellent serving and driving deep to a good length forcing errors from his opponent. However, he was unable to maintain this and his opponent fought back well to clinch victory by 3 games to 1.
Brother Troy was next on and a very tight first game was lost 11-9 before an even tighter second game was narrowly won 14-12. Gaining confidence from this, Troy began to dominate in the third and fourth games coming through to an excellent 3-1 victory.
Finn Holliday secured victory for the team with a comfortable 3-0 win dropping only 3 points in the process.
The boys each marked/scored a match and conducted themselves in exemplary fashion throughout to their great credit.
The team will play their second match in the league at home against Dunnings Squash Club from East Grinstead on 16 November. Thanks to Freedom Leisure for their support of the team.
