Field Place likely to be the name for the development on the old St Michael's Convent site in Uckfield.

Field Place name suggested for old Uckfield convent site housing estate

Developers of the former convent site in New Town, Uckfield, are proposing calling the development Field Place.

Building is going on apace on the land between the main road and the Victoria Pleasure Ground, off Old Timbers Lane.

A view of development on the old St Michael’s Convent site, Uckfield, from the Victoria Pleasure Ground.

The old building was a dominant feature on the Uckfield skyline but efforts to have it saved failed and it was demolished to make way for the new homes.

The convent became empty after the Sisters of the Convent Mercy moved to Midhurst. Only a handful of Sisters lived there at the time of closure.

The building had a number of uses including a school. In late Victorian times it was a pioneering agricultural college.

Members of the environment and leisure committee of Uckfield Town Council briefly discussed the developer’s suggested name but didn’t feel it was appropriate.

They have requested something more in keeping with its former use as an agricultural college.
