Father and son battle in squash final

Father and son Stephen and Finn Holliday clashed in Uckfield squash finals which took place on Sunday.

Families were out in force for the tournament at Uckfield Leisure Centre. Also competing – but not against each other – were George Tardew and his mother Lucy.

Seventeen-year-old Finn met his father in the men’s final where they faced long and tiring rallies.

Stephen took a 2-0 lead but Finn came storming back and won the third game as Stephen tired, then there was a tight fourth game which Stephen took 12-10 to win the match 3-1.

George Tardew, on a handicap of -1, played in the mixed handicap event against the more experienced Ian Bradbury. Two of the games were tight but Ian’s good play and tactics triumped in a 3-0 victory.

George’s mum played in the ladies final where she met second time finalist Leesha Daniells, 15. Leesha started off strongly to take the first game but Lucy came back with accurate and controlled squash to take control and secure a 3-1 victory.

Ray Kennedy and Chris Moore met in the veterans 45+ category. Chris took the first game while Ray fought back hard in the next two but could not quite get close enough and Chris was able to see out the match 3-0.

Trophies were presented after post-match food and drinks and coach Stephen Holliday said: “Although the oldies triumphed this year, the future looks very promising with so many youngsters now coming through the ranks.”
