South Brockwells seasonal farm shop at Little Horsted is holding free game taster days this Friday and Saturday (November 29 and 30) to celebrate Great British Game Week.
The event will run from 11am to 3pm and there will be chance to sample oven-ready game, free of charge, and watch cooking demonstrations in the shop where you will be shown how to prepare and cook recipes old and new.
Glass of wine
Customers will be also be offered a glass of wine to celebrate nearly 50 years of the farm being run by one family who are launching a new partnership.
David Douglas and his late wife Sherry moved to South Brockwells Farm, which is just off the A26 at TN22 5QS – see signs to Oven Ready Game – in 1976.
Now sisters Chrissy Wells and Sarah Robinson, together with Chrissy’s husband Arron, are extending the family partnership as their father David, who will soon be celebrating his 80th birthday, is getting ready to retire. As all with all farmers, David won’t bow out altogether as he loves the farm and will continue to help in busy times.
The business has evolved over time but the emphasis at the shop has always been to concentrate on locally sourced, seasonal fare. It is known for game at this time of year and their home grown asparagus from mid-April to mid-June.
Also to be seen on the farm – in its beautiful setting – are horses, a polytunnel for vegetables, sheep, Boer meat goats, and free range rescue hens.
At the game taster days you will also find award-winning Bridgers Farm Christmas turkeys for sale, home-grown seasonal vegetables and other locally sourced produce.
Other events to look out for during the course of a year on the farm are lambing days, bluebell walks, and equine events.
