Empty shop unit may become a flat on Fernley Park, Uckfield

Developer Linden Homes is seeking planning permission to convert an empty shop unit at Fernley Park, Uckfield, to a two-bedroom flat.

The unit at 17 Baxendale Way was completed in November 2009 but since that time there has been almost no interest in anyone wishing to buy the property.

Lawson Commercial has widely marketed the property to potential businesses.

A report supporting the planning application from Chris Lawson said sadly none of the targeted marketing produced any serious inquiry for the property.

Continued marketing brought inquiries from people interested in renting the property but the owners were only interested in a freehold sale, he said.

He added that Framfield Road another “community area” which had seen former shops converted to residential in recent years

Mr Lawson concluded: “We suggest a single shop on its own on a housing estate is not viable because its only market is the housing estate itself. It is not visible from Eastbourne Road and potential occupiers do not believe they would generate sufficient business to be successful.”
