Deadline for comments on Harlands Farm 119 homes plan extended

The deadline for comments on detail of plans to build 119 homes on the Harlands Farm Estate in Uckfield has been extended to October 18.

The reserved matters planning application dates back to 2013 and took a lot of people by surprise. They thought the original application to build 146 homes must have expired.

A consultation deadline was due to expire today but Wealden Council has now said: “Given the nature of the proposals being put forward Wealden District Council has decided to re-open the public consultation period. It will now re-open on September 27, and close on October 18, 2019.”

Before this decision one resident, Carol Baker asked: “How long does planning permission last?”

She pointed out that a number of consultees were listed on Wealden Council’s website but all were dated 2013. “Surely six years on, these should be done again as situations have changed.”

Carol was concerned there had been no consultation with residents this time around.

“It was done over six years ago and residents have changed. There are now a further two (about to be three) new developments on the south side of town. No improvements have been made to the road from Harlands to the town, and only a couple of the issues raised in 2013 have been addressed.”

A Wealden spokesperson said the reserved matters application, WD/2013/0415 was submitted in 2013 and never decided. Outline planning permission was given for 145 homes in October 2008.

The spokesperson said: “Discussions have been continuing with the then applicant, Miller Homes, and when the site was transferred to Persimmon Homes, these discussions continued.

“The application has never lapsed, and the applicants have not sought to appeal against the council due to a lack of decision.

“In August this year, Persimmon Homes provided further details of a revised scheme for the site to accompany this application.

“Given the amount of time that has subsequently elapsed the Council re-advertised the application at the site and wrote to 75 local people to inform them of the proposals.

The application is expected to be discussed at a meeting of the Wealden’s Planning Committee North in the coming months.
