Dahlias are brought out of hibernation

The bitter cold isn’t stopping signs of spring from appearing in the garden. Here are some pictures I have taken of new buds and flowers spotted, writes the Uckfield News Anonymous Gardener.

Over a few days in March I took the chance to re-paint the garden bench. It started to look a little worse over winter but a new coat of paint should keep it looking good for the rest of the year.

Do you remember me writing about saving dahlia tubers for re-planting in the Spring?

Well, this month the dahlias came out of the newspaper where they were being kept and were put in a shallow tray of moist compost with the roots facing downwards.

Then all that needed to be done was to give them a bit of water. Now the tubers can be kept in a greenhouse or alternatively on a window ledge for a couple of weeks.

After a few weeks shoots should appear.
