Cricket – Uckfield Anderida struggle against strong Iden side

Uckfield made the long trip to Iden, in search of a much-needed victory to give them the slightest of hopes of survival, writes Tom Grimes.

With Uckfield winning the toss and bowling first, on a slow surface and even slower outfield, it looked the correct decision.

It certainly seemed that way when opener Chris Brady had Pete Thomson caught at slip in the 7th over. However, that was as good as it got for Uckfield.

Unbeaten stand

Rob Clemence (125) and James Crombie (79) put on an unbeaten stand of over 200 to make the Uckfield bowlers and fielders suffer in the heat.

Despite the excellently accurate spell from Anthony Muggeridge (0-18 from 8 overs), the other Uckfield bowlers could not find their rhythm, offering bad balls regularly to the Iden batsman.

Uckfield to their credit kept on going, and despite the good effort in the field Iden amassed 240-1 in the 40 overs.

Poor start

Uckfield made a poor start in their chase, with opening bowler Paul Barnett (1-7) keeping things tight and limiting the Uckfield run rate.

It was tough going, with opener David Tungate and Mark Greenslade finding it hard to rotate the strike, let alone find the boundary.

Greenslade (28) did find his range, hitting three boundaries in an over. However, he fell just as he was getting going, to a good caught and bowled.

Assured

Muggeridge joined Tungate at the crease and looked very assured. They rotated the strike well, however boundaries continued to be a rarity.

Muggeridge fell for 38, and Uckfield set about aiming for maximum batting points (180), rather than the 241 they needed to win the game. They fell three runs short of this, finishing on 177-3, with Tungate finishing unbeaten on 78.

It was a good effort by Uckfield, but ultimately came up against a strong Iden side.

Next match

Uckfield first team host Pett on Saturday, whilst the second team travel to bottom of the table Laughton.
