Conservative Nus Ghani holds Wealden seat

Nus Ghani has been re-elected Wealden MP for the Conservative Party.

She increased her share of the vote by 4.2% to 37,027, but Angela Smith did well increasing the Labour share of the vote by 11.3% to 13,399.

In 2015 UKIP took second place. This time their candidate Nicola Burton lost 13% of their vote polling 1,798.

Other votes recorded were Chris Bowers, Liberal Democrat, 6,281, up 1.3% and Colin Stocks, 1,959, down 3.1%

The Conservatives took 61.2% of the vote, Labour 22.2%, the Liberal Democrats 10.4%, the Green Party 3.2% and UKIP 3.0%

The turnout in Wealden was 74.4% up from 71.3% in 2015.

UCTC’s mock election result

When UCTC held a mock election the winners were the Green Party, followed by the Liberal Democrats, Independents, Conservatives and Labour.

Taking part in the debate were Davy Jones, Green; Chris Bowers, Liberal Democrat; Peter Griffiths, Independent (he attended previously as UKIP); Nus Ghani, Conservative; and Angela Smith, Labour.

The results were:

  • Green 97
  • Liberal Democrat 83
  • Independent 22
  • Conservative 15
  • Labour 10
