Classroom flood hits UCTC just as Ofsted announces inspection

There couldn't have been a worse time for a radiator to leak in a music room at Uckfield Community Technology College. It happened just as Ofsted was due to carry out a spot check on the music department.

Two inches of hot water was on the floor and the room had steamed up with water dripping down spoiling keyboards and other equipment.

College principal Hugh Hennebry told the story at a senior recital evening yesterday and praised college staff who rallied to make the best of the situation.

Mr Hennebry said it had been quite a week for director of music Rob Wakeling but, while the findings of the inspectors couldn't yet be revealed, it was clear the standard of music provision at the college had been improving under his leadership.

A mix of rock, jazz and classical music were included on the programme at the recital evening which gave sixth form students preparing for their AS and A level music examinations chance to perform and for the college to highlight students' talents.

The college parent teacher association provided refreshments and Mr Wakeling told the audience how the association had bought a motorised lighting system featured during the evening and a “complete complement of amplifiers” for the practice room.

“Their support is hugely appreciated by the students and staff of the college,” he said.
