Citizens Advice makes life better for hundreds of Uckfield people

Hundreds of people’s lives will be made better this year by Uckfield Citizens Advice (CA).

The most disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the community are helped, a special report shows.

In part one we explain just how big an operation it is and the results a dedicated team of highly-trained volunteers achieve for clients, writes Paul Watson.

The Uckfield operation is part of the wider Wealden Citizens Advice which helped more than 4,700 people with over 18,000 issues last year (2018).

The service secured around £1.3m in additional income for clients and managed to get more than £1m in debt written off for clients who were often in financial difficulty following a drastic change in their circumstances (illness/accident, bereavement, relationship breakdown, loss of employment).

Overall clients were helped to secure improved financial outcomes totalling more than £2.4m.

Numbers of people helped

The Uckfield office helped nearly 1,500 people (from the town and wider area) with more than 5,660 issues, securing £679,000 in improved financial outcomes for clients, including £419,000 in additional income and helping clients write off £256,534 in debt.

Overall the service helped 534 Uckfield residents with 2,474 issues, securing over £343,000 in improved financial outcomes for those clients, including over £239k in additional income – mostly benefits people did not know they were entitled to or had been denied but Citizens Advice helped them secure on appeal.

Health conditions

Kay Birch, Chief Executive, Wealden Citizens Advice, told this website: “We are supporting the most disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the community – two out of every five clients have a long-term health condition or disability and we helped people with around 300 issues relating to actual, or threatened, homelessness this year.

“By helping people stay in their home, or by enabling them to afford to heat their home or feed their families, it is estimated that for every £1 invested in our service we save the taxpayer more than twice that (eg: homelessness services, unnecessary A&E admissions etc).”
