Christopher Howarth found guilty of sexual offences

The Rev Christopher Howarth, from Uckfield, was found guilty this afternoon at Hove Trial Centre of a series of sexual offences. He has been remanded in custody.

Mr Howarth, 68, of Rocks Park Road, who retired as a deputy principal at Uckfield Community Technology College eight years ago was also a non-stipendiary priest at Holy Cross Church.

He was a prominent figure in the town through his long service at the school and through his church work. On Uckfield carnival night he was usually one of the priests conducting the service outside the Cinque Ports Club.

A petition ‘Support Rev Chris Howarth’ was signed by 717 people with the aim of providing a character reference for him.

Before the trial which took place at Hove Trial Centre Mr Howarth admitted causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

After the jury was sworn in he admitted taking indecent photographs of a child.

The jury found Mr Howarth guilty of 26 charges:

  • Causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity
  • Causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Taking indecent photographs of a child
  • Sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual activity with a child
  • Causing a child to watch a sexual act

The jury found Mr Howarth not guilty of five charges:

  • Assault of a child under 13
