Wealden Council is offering parents the opportunity to try out cloth nappies free of charge as part of Real Nappy Week.
The council has trial kits, containing a wide range of nappies and accessories, which are available to borrow for up to four weeks.
The aim is to give parents the chance to test a selection of the latest nappies, in your own home, to find the best one that suits your baby, lifestyle and budget. Free advice is available throughout the trial.
The council says that by using cloth nappies families could save anywhere from £100 to £1,000. The more children they have in cloth, the bigger the saving.
Also by choosing cloth over single use nappies, families could make up to a 40% carbon saving.
Currently UK families send 355,000 tonnes of disposable nappies to landfill each year, costing local authorities, and tax payers, £32 million a year.
The aim of offering a free trial of cloth nappies is to help change habits.
The council says: “Have we become too accustomed to Buy it, Use it, Throw it lifestyle? What’s wrong with: Buy it, Use it, Use it again, Pass it on. Cloth nappies are the perfect exaple of the change in habit that is needed.”
A council press release says modern real nappies are stylish, fashionable and come in a range of designs, materials, sizes and colours designed to suit your baby and your pocket. They fasten easily with poppers or Velcro and can help with early potty training.
