Colourful banners will greet Uckfield Community Technology College students as they return to school today.
The banners have been designed by Year 9 pupils and incorporate Olympic and Paralympic values, which have been embraced by the college, and help to create a festive atmosphere for its 60th anniversary year.
They were funded through a grant awarded by the Olympics because of the work the college does within the community, including through the carnival group Spiritus and through its work with primary schools in the run up to the Uckfield Festival.
Clare Summons director of creativity at UCTC said students took inspiration for their designs from patterns and colours around the school. They found out about the history of the school and its logo.
From all those drawings, designs, photographs and ideas each of them made a birthday tile to go up on one of the school walls and then work began on the banners.
The designs are also incorporated into little pins that will be awarded to students seen to be representing Olympic values during the course of the birthday year.
Mrs Summons said: “We are looking for creativity, cross curricular activity, community work and values such as respect, perseverance and determination.”
She added it was “fantastic” to discover that former student Sam Imber was running his own printing company in Uckfield. He was a past member of Spiritus and was now producing a variety of work for the college.
Mrs Summons is tracking down other creative students from the college to take part in an exhibition next summer. She has found them working with big name companies such as John Galliano, Paul Smith, Abercrombie and Wrangler.
“It is absolutely fantastic and I am bowled over by the positive nature of the students who are pleased to have been contacted, want to be a part of our celebrations and are to contribute some of their work for display. It is heart-warming.”
