Eleven bike riders will be tackling a 100-mile challenge over two days at the weekend to raise funds in memory of Uckfield butcher Daniel Osborne who died aged 25 in a car crash last Christmas.
The cyclists will travel 100 miles over the South Downs to help Dan’s wife Kayleigh and daughter Sophie, who was just four-weeks old when her father died after his car hit a sheet of ice and ran into a tree.
Kayleigh wants to run the family businesses for their daughter to grow up into. DJ Osborne Butchers in Framfield Road, Uckfield and Simply Meat, an online butchers and delivery business, are well respected in the area but Kayleigh knows that keeping everything going will be a struggle.
For this reason the riders decided their challenge had to be a struggle too and their efforts are being supported by sponsors Hemlow a building maintenance company and Hop Drop a craft brewery.
They will be wearing specially designed cycling jerseys and plan to present a framed jersey to the butcher’s shop after the ride.
Chris Ward, from Hemlow, who was an usher at Dan and Kayleigh’s wedding will be leading the pack of riders aged from 20 to 60. He said: “100 miles and hill-climbs that are the same as scaling Ben Nevis, Snowden and Scafell Pike in two days is going to be really challenging.
“There’ll be sore bottoms and burning thighs well before the end of the first day. We are raising money for Sophie’s Trust which has been set up to help her in the future without her dad.”
Kayleigh told Uckfield News that she would be waiting for the cyclists at Eastbourne when they finished their ride.
She said: “Chris and Dan shared a few bike rides together but Chris has always been a keen bike rider.
“I know most of the guys doing the ride and some of them have been thrown in at the deep end and haven’t done anything like this before.
“I wish them all the best of luck and I’ll certainly be cheering them on at the finishing line. The T-shirts look fantastic and I know they will be wearing them with pride for Dan.”
