Attempts are to be made to get the Waitrose car park in Uckfield open to southbound traffic, as well as vehicles heading north.
The River Way car park has been little used since the start of the roadworks last Monday (September 22).
A meeting is due to be held today (September 30) between councillors and officials to see if the traffic system can be further tweaked to reduce peak-time delays.
Jams are particularly bad in the evening rush, although for the rest of the day the traffic is no worse than normal.
Uckfield county councillor Claire Dowling said: “What we want to do is to try and get the Waitrose car park open (to southbound vehicles) and get the message out that the town is not closed for business. We want to get the Waitrose car park open as soon as we can.”
Cllr Dowling said that a week ago the queues were horrendous and the town was empty. “People in the villages have just decided that Uckfield is closed,” she said.
Trade had picked up as the week had gone on, she said.
Work is continuing to improve signage and stress that the town was open for business. She hoped a sign that said “New Town closed” would be withdrawn.
Cllr Dowling was also aware that townspeople called the car park next to the river, the Waitrose car park and not the River Way car park. She hoped too that these signs would be changed.
