Beware distraction thieves in Uckfield supermarket car parks

Police are urging motorists to beware after distraction thieves have been reported operating in supermarket car parks in Uckfield, Hailsham and Eastbourne.Police sign

In the latest incident in Eastbourne a woman had finished her shopping yesterday morning in Tesco’s car park in Lottsbridge Drove when a man knocked on her car window and pointed out a long nail in her tyre.

She got out to investigate and he took withdrew it from the tyre. It was later at home that she found two bank cards had been taken from her handbag that had been in the car and £300 taken from each.

Sgt Julian Williams said: “It seems the woman was distracted while another person stole her bank cards. I urge people that when someone takes your attention, for whatever reason, know that your bag and wallet are secure. It is possible that someone saw her enter her pin number at the checkout. Always cover the screen and realise that thieves can sometimes act in pairs or groups. We are investigating this incident and want people to be aware.”

The man she saw is described as Eastern European, slim, with collar length light brown hair, blue eyes and wearing a beige coat.

On January 22 there were two similar incidents in Tesco car parks in Hailsham and Uckfield where an Eastern European woman and man tricked the drivers into checking their tyres for nail and a purse and debit card were stolen.

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting serial 636 of 30/1 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
