Anonymous donor offers free place on Mindfulness course

Mindfulness has made such a difference to the life of one participant in a course run by Debbie Horney that they are sponsoring a place to help somebody else suffering anxiety in the aftermath of cancer.

The donor who does not want to be named said they were really grateful to have had the opportunity to experience mindfulness on Debbie’s course.

The donor said: “It came after a time of bereavement from losing parents, and also after recovery from cancer. I say ‘after recovery’ with care as I don’t think it’s ever something that is recovered from entirely.

Anxiety and worry

“My experience of the months and years following cancer treatment have been full of anxiety and worry of its return. I’ve spoken to others and there seems to be a familiar theme in their recovery.

“I feel that mindfulness would benefit anyone recovering from the hideous treatment of cancer and for that reason I would like to sponsor a place on a mindfulness course for someone having had cancer who is suffering from stress and anxiety.”

Debbie, who is launching classes in Uckfield in the New Year, as well as in Ringmer, Lewes, Hurstpierpoint, and Portslade, says: “If this resonates with you and you would like to apply for this free place, please would you email me the following:

  1. Why you would like to be given this opportunity
  2. The date your cancer treatment finished
  3. Details of your ability to commit to the course sessions and homework requirements.

More information

“If you need more information to answer question three please look at  for details about where and when the courses are held.”

Debbie adds: “Please note that each session is two-and-a-half hours and there will be between 30-45 minutes per day of mindfulness practice to do at home from guided meditations that I email you after each session.

“This offer is for the ‘right person’ and not the ‘first person’. The next course begins in January 2020. If the right person has not been found by then, this offer will run over to the courses starting in May.

“The sponsor of this place will be involved in selecting this future Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course participant.”

Debbie said she was grateful to the donor for their sponsorship: “I’m always pleased to receive positive testimonials when people have completed my classes but to then go on to offer to sponsor a place for somebody else is very special indeed.

“Many thanks to the donor, whose privacy I am respecting. This place will mean a lot to somebody who has been through a tough time and would appreciate some restful ‘me’ time.”
