Good beer, a menu that changes monthly, specials that change weekly, a wide variety of events and a four-star recommendation from TripAdvisor – that’s the Alma Arms in Framfield Road, Uckfield.

Landlord Ben Martin has just celebrated five years at the pub and he and manager Michelle Morris, who has been there nine years, put on a party to mark the occasion.

They say this was thoroughly enjoyed by their customers who walk in from a wide catchment area or park in the adjoining car park.

“It’s a pub with a friendly atmosphere,” said Michelle.

Ben and Michelle aim to put on events to suit all tastes, from quizzes to Build Your Own Burger nights and from poker to Morris dancing and band nights. There’s also a beer garden and a play area for kids.

A function room accommodates 100 people enjoying a buffet, who are also able to spill out into the beer garden, or 65 people seated.

The function room is free of charge if the bar is used and the pub provides a buffet but there is the option to do your own catering with free use of the room as long as £150 is spent at the bar.

The Alma Arms chef is Adam Krajewski who sources food locally and serves up everything from sandwiches and snacks to three course meals.

He enjoys ringing the changes and a new menu appears at the end of every month. He also encourages customers to Build Your Own Burger once a month choosing their own buns, meat, cheese, sauce, toppings, potato side and salad side, for just £9.95 a person.

The TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence carrying four stars arrived completely out of the blue recently and Ben, Michelle and Adam are pleased that customer reviews led to the award.

Music nights are held four times a year at The Alma and the next band to play there is Far Cry on Saturday, September 26, with Curst Sons are coming on Saturday, December 19.

The Alma – which is in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and has been for the last five years – serves Harveys Sussex Best Bitter, Sussex Mild and seasonal beers on draught plus a full range of bottled beers, ciders and wines and spirits.

A warm welcome is promised if you call in to sample the fare and enjoy the company.
