Your chance to learn more about being a county councillor

People interested in representing their local area and helping to run East Sussex County Council services are being invited to a special information event this month.

Local government elections are being held in May next year and the County Council is hosting a ‘Pre Election Event’ on 18 September 2012 at County Hall, Lewes for anyone interested in standing for election.

Refreshments will be available from 6.00 pm with the event running from 6.30 pm – 7.30 pm.

County councillors make key decisions on services such as supporting schools, looking after the elderly and vulnerable, maintaining roads and planning waste.

The council wants to help people interested in learning more about what it means to be a councillor and what is involved.

Those attending the Pre Election Event will be able to meet senior officers and current councillors and ask questions.

Anyone considering standing for election and those who have been selected as candidates by political parties are encouraged to attend.

The programme will begin with an introduction by county council chief executive Becky Shaw, who will provide an overview of the East Sussex area, what the county council does and give a flavour of current key issues.

A panel of current councillors will then speak about their experience at East Sussex County Council, including any specific formal roles and the work they carry out in their local area.

For those who cannot attend on the evening, the event will be recorded and available on the county council’s webcast facility via its website – www.eastsussex.gov.uk. For more information, please contact Andy Cottell on 01273 481955 or andy.cottell@eastsussex.gov.uk.
