Female drivers in Uckfield, Buxted, Crowborough and the wider Wealden area have been warned to be on their guard by Sussex Police.
Officers have issued an alert after receiving reports over the last two weeks of a dark-haired man in his 50s who is flagging down cars, appearing to be in distress and in need of help.
“He is described as being of a fairly heavy build, of either Asian or European appearance and reports say he speaks with an Eastern European-sounding accent.
“He offers various reasons for stopping cars but in all cases he is asking for money and it seems he has so far only approached women.
“He has told different drivers alternative versions eg: that he has run out of petrol, has no money to feed his children, or that he has problems with his credit card.
“In all cases, he tries to interest the driver in buying one of his gold rings for the money which he tries to remove from his finger.
Police said the incidents have been reported on roads near Uckfield, Nutley, Crowborough, on the A27 just outside Kingston and Lewes, on the A26 going towards Newhaven and also in locations around Rother district.
In all cases, a silver coloured Ford Galaxy has been parked nearby, which police understand is one of the older models.
If anybody has information about this man or thinks they have also been stopped by him, contact Sussex Police on 101 by phone, or email firstname.lastname@example.org and quote reference 435 of 11/08.
