Wealden Council warns about con men claiming overweight bin payments

Wealden Council is warning that con men have been operating in neighbouring local authorities claiming payments to empty overweight brown bins.wealden-con-men

The men claim to be employees of Kier the council’s waste and recycling contractor. They have also been requesting Christmas tips.

They have been wearing high visibility tabards over ordinary clothing and operating in the Bexhill and Sidley area which, like Wealden, are covered by the East Sussex Joint Waste Partnership.

The council is asking that anyone approached emails recycling@wealden.gov.uk.

It says that in cases where brown garden waste bins are overweight the council will ticket the bin. It does not approach residents requesting them for any additional money.

The scam came to light when the Partnership’s own contractors visited the properties later in the day.
