Vandals destroy picnic table at Millennium Green

Vandals have destroyed a picnic table at the Millennium Green, Uckfield.

They broke one of the ground anchors and damaged the table so extensively that it cannot be repaired.

Millennium Green Trust chairman Mick Harker said yesterday: “The table sits in the rather secluded dog-free zone picnic area so the damage was only discovered today on one of our routine inspections.

“The table is a substantial unit and was fixed to the ground by two anchors. Whoever decided to damage the table obviously used considerably force to not only break one of the anchors out of the ground and then destroy the table as the other anchor refused to break free.

“Unfortunately the damage is so extensive that it is not repairable so we will need a replacement.

“With the summer months approaching this is a great loss as many family users of the green loved to sit in this area and enjoy a barbecue or picnic.”

Mick said the Millennium Green was a private trust, not part of the council, so all income came from either grants for specific projects or from subscriptions from people who were Friends of the Green.

He added: “So unless we can find a sponsor, the replacement will need to be funded from our meagre resources which means other improvements for the green we have planned will be delayed.”

The incident has been reported to the police.
