UCTC students set to be co-opted on to Uckfield Town Council

Two students are set to become co-opted members of Uckfield Town Council.

They will be able to participate in town council discussions but not vote.

It is seen as a ground-breaking scheme whch other local authorities will watch to see the results.

At one stage the council was keen to set up a “youth council” but this failed to get off the ground.

A new approach was taken to youth engagement with the council working with Uckfield Community Technology College (UCTC).

Two Year 13 – final year at the college – students are interested in engaging with the town council’s committee process.

Both are 18 and interested in politics.

The co-option is set to take place at the February meeting of the town council.
