Uckfield’s Claire Dowling retains deputy leader role on Wealden Council

Cllr Bob Standley has been reappointed leader of Wealden District Council with Uckfield’s Cllr Claire Dowling as his deputy following the May election.

A council press release quotes Cllr Standley saying: “The election has given Wealden Conservatives a clear mandate to continue the policies of the last council and deliver the exciting projects set out in our 2015-19 corporate plan.”

“These are still financially challenging times and we will need to make savings or find income of around £1.5million over the next three years. As we found during our transformation programme 2009-13, the earlier we make decisions, the more manageable is the task.

“Let me seek to clarify: When I talk of generating income, that won’t mean car parking charges. We are committed to maintaining our car parks as free at the point of delivery.

“As a council, we will continue to encourage economic growth and protect the countryside, we will seek to increase the amount we recycle and keep our High Streets vibrant. We will deliver our local plan.

“It is for the whole council to deliver the commitment we have made to the public and cabinet will lead in this task.”

Wealden’s new cabinet has been slimmed down from seven to six members. The new cabinet roles are as follows:

Bob Standley – Leader, Governance and Finance: Responsibilities include corporate policy, budget, council tax and asset management.

Claire Dowling – Deputy Leader, Public Health and Community Safety: Responsibilities include food safety, leisure, pollution control and animal welfare. (Councillor Dowling represents Uckfield Central Ward)

Roy Galley – Economic Development and Waste Management: Responsibilities include business, tourism, recycling and the Pine Grove site. (Danehill/Fletching/Nutley)

Ann Newton – Planning and Development. Responsibilities include Local Plan, AONB policy planning and enforcement. (Framfield Ward)

Nick Collinson – Community Leadership and Human Resources. Responsibilities include consultation, human resources and customer services.

Graham Wells – Housing and Benefits. Responsibilities include council housing, affordable housing, housing and council tax support.

The new chairman of the council is Cllr Barby Dashwood-Morris, who represents the Chiddingly, East Hoathly and Laughton Ward. One of the chairman’s charities this year will be Friends of Uckfield Community Hospital.
