New Uckfield Mayor is Cllr Spike Mayhew and new Deputy Mayor is Cllr Jackie Love.
Both were elected last night by members of Uckfield Town Council. They are taking over from Cllr Louise Eastwood and Cllr Duncan Bennett.
Cllr Mayhew, 51, who lives in Forge Rise, told Uckfield News after the meeting that he was “very excited and massively proud” to be given the opportunity.
He said he had no idea he would be elected and his first task would be telling his wife Wendy about his new role. The couple have two children Daisy-Anne and Curtis.
Spiritus and Uckfield Theatre Guild
In addition to being a town councillor (Independent, New Town), Cllr Mayhew is involved with the Uckfield Community Technology College Spiritus carnival group and chair of Uckfield Theatre Guild.
He works for Southern Railway and is a competence development manager looking after train drivers. He drives trains himself too.
Cllr Mayhew who chaired the town council’s plans sub-committee last year and will continue to sit on the committee said an important year lay ahead for Uckfield with major changes coming up.
The first of 1,000 new homes will be built at Ridgewood and expansion of Uckfield Community Technology College is on the cards.
Cllr Mayhew said he hoped to continue the good work done by the previous mayor Cllr Eastwood and he thanked fellow councillors for electing him.
Cllr Eastwood said she had enjoyed her time supporting the town and being able to attend, and look after, some of the charities that do valuable work within the community. She had enjoyed supporting councillors too.
Cllr Eastwood said: “We have a great little town, yes it’s not perfect, no town is, but we have great community spirit.”
Cllr Jackie Love is a member of the Trust Independent group and represents Uckfield North.
