Uckfield Town Council to have a credit card

Uckfield Town Council is to have a credit card.

The decision was taken by members of the council’s general purposes committee after hearing officers were using their personal credit cards to make purchases and then claiming the money from the council.

A report to councillors said: “As members will be aware, this is completely unsatisfactory and officers should not have to use their own monies for purchases on behalf of the council.

“It is well recognised that purchasing goods online can lead to significant savings which can benefit the council.

“The instances where such personal expenditure by officers has taken place have been very few, the last being the purchase of the USBs given to all members following the recent elections.”

Cllr Paul Sparks (Liberal Democrat, North Ward) said it was totally unsatisfactory that individual members of staff were having to use their personal credit cards.

He was satisfied the council had in place the necessary safeguards to ensure there were no risks to the authority.

The card will be restricted to senior officer use only with a £500 expenditure limit.
