Uckfield students win recognition from Society of Biology

Seven students from Uckfield Community Technology College (UCTC) have won recognition from the Society of Biology after taking part in a competition to extend their knowledge.

The A-level Biology students took part in the 2015 British Biology Olympiad. Three of them won silver medals, one received a bronze medal and two gained certificates of commendation.

More than 6000 candidates took part in the competition and a UCTC press release said only a small proportion gained medals and certificates.

The release said: “The British Biology Olympiad challenges and stimulates students with an interest in biology to expand and extend their talents. In offering a wider syllabus than A-level, it allows students to demonstrate their knowledge and to be suitably rewarded and publicly recognised by the award of medals, certificates and other prizes.”

Silver medal winners were Year 13 students Thomas Michaelson-Yeates, Jed Mills and Matthew Warren. Charlotte Heath won a bronze medal.

Year 12 students Danielle Fothergill, Carlamarita Hazelgrove and Flavio Lima Bianchi gained certificates of commendation showing great promise after just four months studying biology at advanced level.
