Uckfield Foodbank volunteers welcome customers to a food collection weekend at Tesco.

Uckfield Foodbank thanks community for food donations

Uckfield Foodbank has received the largest amount of food ever from a Tesco Food Collection weekend.

Customers donated 1,556Kg of food, the equivalent to 120 produce boxes, from November 30 to  December 2, 2017.

Chair of Trustees for Uckfield Foodbank, Peter Roe, said “We cannot thank the community of Uckfield enough for their massive generosity not only during the weekend collection but throughout this year too.

“The foodbank has been open for four years and year on year we have seen continued increase in support from individuals in food donations, financial donations and people volunteering with us.”

From January to November this year the foodbank has seen a 70% increase in the number of people being given food boxes compared with the same period last year.

A total of 862 people (347 of them children) were helped as against a total of 507 (190 of them children) for the same period in 2016.

Problems in receiving benefits is the main reason people go the foodbank for help, closely followed by those on low incomes.
