UCKFIELD ELECTIONS: Nominations close and well-known faces stand down

Former town mayors, Louise Eastwood and Ian Smith will not contest the elections

Election nominations for district and town council polls on May 2 have been published.

The elections are being fought on new boundaries.

A number of prominent councillors are standing down, including two former town mayors, Louise Eastwood and Ian Smith.

In two wards for Uckfield Town Council there are insufficient candidates for the number of seats available and those nominated will be returned unopposed.

• Keith Everett was validly nominated for the Uckfield Ridgewood seat but died after the time had passed for withdrawals but before the nominations were published. As a result, his name still appears on the list.

 Standing down

Current town councillors who are standing down are Louise Eastwood, Ian Smith, Mick Dean, Daniel Manvell and Paul Meakin. (Paul Meakin is instead standing for election to Wealden Council)

Mrs Eastwood has been town mayor on more occasions than any other person – serving two, three-year periods. She was first elected in 1998 and was mayor from 2006 to 2009 and 2015 to 2018.

Ian Smith was town mayor from 2013-2015.

Mick Dean, who has served a four-year term as a councillor, was chairman of the environment and leisure committee for three consecutive years, 2015-2018. Councillors are not allowed to hold the the chairmanship of a committee for any longer than three consecutive years.

Daniel Manvell served first as a co-opted youth member of the town council and won a by-election in Uckfield North, standing for Labour.

Paul Meakin is currently chairman of the finance sub-committee.

In the Wealden elections, two of the current councillors for Uckfield – Barry Marlowe and Carol Reynolds – are standing down.
